Shark deaths endanger scallop population

WASHINGTON - Overfishing of powerful sharks â a top predator in the ocean â may endanger bay scallops, a gourmet delicacy. With fewer sharks to devour them, skates and rays have increased sharply along the East Coast and they are gobbling up shellfish, particularly bay scallops, researchers report in Friday's issue of the journal Science.
Ecologists have known that reducing key species on land can affect an entire ecosystem, but this study provides hard data for the same thing in the ocean, said lead author Charles H. Peterson of the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of North Carolina.
Co-author Ransom A. Myers of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Peterson were studying different ends of the food chain, Peterson said in a telephone interview.
"Myers was working on great sharks and I was working on cownose rays and their impact on bay scallops and other shellfish. We realized that separately we had interesting science, but together we had an absolute revelation," he said.
"We were able to show why these top predators matter," Peterson said. "We knew the answer right there, that there was a consequence."
Peterson, who works at the university center in Morehead City, N.C., said scallops used to be so abundant there that people were allowed to collect a bushel a day. "The kids were able to see that food doesn't just come from a market," he said.
Now, scallops are very reduced, he said. "The rays, as they come through, eat all that are in any dense patch and have eaten so many there does not appear to be enough to create spawning stock."
Scallops are an easy target because they do not burrow into the sand, Peterson said. Millions of rays from Chesapeake Bay migrate through the area, he said. "What are they going to feed on to fuel their migration?"
In some areas they enter seagrass beds and dig up clams, but that is an important nursery habitat for shrimp, blue crabs and fish, Peterson said, "so there is a high concern that we may now be cascading to habitat destruction."
Not so sure was Steve Murawski, director of scientific programs at the National Marine Fisheries Service. He said the links between the large sharks, medium size rays and bay scallops were "tenuous."
There is very little food and feeding data on the rays, he said, and in terms of the decline of bay scallops, habitat degradation and environmental issues could be factors, too. As for the increase in rays, he said, they used to be widely caught and discarded and fishing has declined in their prime habitat.
Murawski, who was not part of the research team, said he is not saying there is no relationship among the sharks, rays and scallops, only that other factors also need to be considered.
Robert E. Hueter, director of shark research at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Fla., said scientists have warned about the effects of shark depletion for years but there have been few studies to back them up.
This report, he said, "demonstrates plausible links between the decline of sharks, the subsequent rise of their prey, and the resulting decline of those prey species' prey. You don't have to be a marine biologist to grasp this connection."
"Scientists will now debate the specific numbers and correlations in this paper, and sadly, Dr. Myers will not be around for that debate," he said. Myers, 54, died Tuesday in Halifax.
Hueter, who was not part of the research team, said the "overall message is important and true: If we take out whole segments of ecosystems, especially top predators like sharks, the balance among species is toppled, and the effects cascade throughout the system. And some of those effects â such as a negative impact on other important fisheries, as in the Myers study â can be long-term and deleterious to human society."
Ellen Pikitch, executive director of the Pew Institute for Ocean Science, said scientists have known that the loss of the great sharks would ripple through the ecosystem in some way, but this is "the first study to show consequences with hard data."
Pikitch was not part of the research team, but the Pew Institute helped support the work.
Other funding came from the Sloan Census of Marine Life, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Killam Trust, North Carolina Fisheries Resource Grants Program, North Carolina Sea Grant and the National Science Foundation.

Norman Cook, ur. 13 Lipca 1963 r. karierę rozpoczął w 1986 r., dołączając do grupy "The Housemartins", zastępując założyciela grupy, Teda Key'a. Po zakończeniu działalności następnego roku, Cook zajął się jego odwieczną pasją: remiksowaniem muzyki i graniem acid-house'owego repertuaru na klubowych parkietach. Jeszcze grając na basie dla "The Housemartins", opanował trudną sztukę władania płytami winylowymi.
Na początku lat 90, Cook zajął się nagrywaniem wspólnie z "Freakpower" i "Beats International" podobnych, house'owych rytmów, jednak z większym wskazaniem na mocne, rapowe bity i psychodeliczne dźwięki. Kolejnym Albumem wydanym przez Slima była kompilacja Big-beatowo - funkowo - klubowa zawierająca jego set utworów innych wykonawców - "On The Floor At The Boutique".
Następnie, w 2000 r. kolejny longplay, "Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars". Płyta okazała się zgoła inna od wcześniejszych jego produkcji. Po raz pierwszy Norman zaprosił do pracy nad swoim albumem wokalistów. Płyta różni się też tym, że kawałki na niej zawarte sa bardziej spokojne, nagrane w stylistyce soulowej, cześciowo trip-hopowej. Może właśnie dlatego Macy Gray zgodziła się na współpracę. Album "Halfway ..." nie odniósł już tak wielkiego sukcesu, ale i tak przez wiele miesięcy single takie jak "Sunset (Bird of Prey)" czy "Weapon of Choice" zajmowały czołowe miejsca na listach przebojów. Oczywiście przyniosły także kilka nagród za teledyski (do utworu "Weapon of Choice", w którym tańczył Christopher Walken).
Fatboy Zrobił sobie potem przerwę w nagrywaniu. W międzyczasie zdążył ożenić się z prezenterką BBC, Zoe Ball, która niedługo potem urodziła mu syna, ochrzczonego imieniem Woody.
W lipcu 2001r. na plaży w Brighton odbyła się megaimpreza, na której za darmo wystąpił Norman. Sam nie spodziewał się tak wielkiej frekwencji i przyznał się potem, że był to jego jak dotąd najlepszy występ w życiu. Warto podkreślić, że był to pierwszy raz, kiedy Norman grał przed publicznością w swoim mieście, Brighton.
Impreza zaowocowała kolejny album, wydany na początku 2002 r. - "Live On Brighton Beach". Był to zapis występu Slima, zawierający m.in. komunikat ostrzegawczy policji, przerywający imprezę i mówiący o zbliżającym się przypływie. Jest to bardzo dobrze zgrana kompilacja house'owych hitów sezonu.
Na razie Norman skoncentrował się na występach w swoim klubie Big Beat Boutique i wspieraniu innych artystów. A być może stworzy coś nowego, ale dopiero w 2003 r.

The curse affected Gaia's Bless, and as is often the case with evil, it twisted and corrupted the plant - instead of curing people of poison, the plant now infects people with poison.
Despite the curse, the outward appearance of the plant stayed the same, and the villagers continued to rely upon it for protection from the poisons used by the armies of Yxunomei.
With the curse in action, Yxunomei ordered her Yuan-ti to attack one final time. The defenders, infected by the poison of Gaia's Bless, were weak and slow, easy prey to the Yuan-ti. The battle lasted no more than an hour. None of the defending villagers survived.The story does not end with a complete triumph of evil however. The Yuan-ti army of Yxunomei moved on, leaving a contingent of troops behind to guard the village. Within days of Yxunomei and the army leaving, the guard force was all dead, drowned in their own boiling saliva: no-one can escape from Gaia's fury. The plant itself has remained cursed though and has spread rapidly. Now only its poisonous version can be found, the original plant is mentioned in the records only twice in past 250 years.

Norman Cook, ur. 13 Lipca 1963 r. karierę rozpoczął w 1986 r., dołączając do grupy "The Housemartins", zastępując założyciela grupy, Teda Key'a. Po zakończeniu działalności następnego roku, Cook zajął się jego odwieczną pasją: remiksowaniem muzyki i graniem acid-house'owego repertuaru na klubowych parkietach. Nadszedł rok 1995 i Norman znalazł czas na tworzenie pod nowym pseudo "Pizzaman" - acid house'owe kawałki i gdzieniegdzie dające się wyczuć zaczątki stylu, którego Cook był pionierem, big-beatu. W poźniejszym czasie, Norman zmienił wytwórnię na "Skint", ale ponieważ pseudonim "Pizzaman" należał do jego starej wytwórni, Cook wymyślił sobie nowe pseudo "Fatboy Slim". Później wydał jeszcze kilka płyt, nie wchodzących w oficjalny skład dyskograficzny. Kolejny album był absolutnym hitem, nowością i bestsellerem wśród nagrań muzycznych. "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" z hitowymi singlami "Right Here Right Now", "The Rockafeller Skank" czy "Praise You" przyniósł Slimowi pełno nagród MTV i Grammy nie tylko za stworzenie fantastycznej, przebojowej i bardzo wesołej muzyki, idealnie nadającej się na imprezy, ale też za oryginalne i wybitne teledyski do jego utworów. Kolejnym Albumem wydanym przez Slima była kompilacja Big-beatowo - funkowo - klubowa zawierająca jego set utworów innych wykonawców - "On The Floor At The Boutique". Następnie, w 2000 r. kolejny longplay, "Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars". Płyta okazała się zgoła inna od wcześniejszych jego produkcji. Po raz pierwszy Norman zaprosił do pracy nad swoim albumem wokalistów. Płyta różni się też tym, że kawałki na niej zawarte sa bardziej spokojne, nagrane w stylistyce soulowej, cześciowo trip-hopowej. Może właśnie dlatego Macy Gray zgodziła się na współpracę. Album "Halfway ..." nie odniósł już tak wielkiego sukcesu, ale i tak przez wiele miesięcy single takie jak "Sunset (Bird of Prey)" czy "Weapon of Choice" zajmowały czołowe miejsca na listach przebojów. Oczywiście przyniosły także kilka nagród za teledyski. Fatboy Zrobił sobie potem przerwę w nagrywaniu. W międzyczasie zdążył ożenić się z prezenterką BBC, Zoe Ball, która niedługo potem urodziła mu syna, ochrzczonego imieniem Woody. W lipcu 2001r. na plaży w Brighton odbyła się megaimpreza, na której za darmo wystąpił Norman. Sam nie spodziewał się tak wielkiej frekwencji i przyznał się potem, że był to jego jak dotąd najlepszy występ w życiu. Warto podkreślić, że był to pierwszy raz, kiedy Norman grał przed publicznością w swoim mieście, Brighton. Impreza zaowocowała kolejny album, wydany na początku 2002 r. - "Live On Brighton Beach". Był to zapis występu Slima, zawierający m.in. komunikat ostrzegawczy policji, przerywający imprezę i mówiący o zbliżającym się przypływie. Jest to bardzo dobrze zgrana kompilacja house'owych hitów sezonu.
Na razie Norman skoncentrował się na występach w swoim klubie Big Beat Boutique i wspieraniu innych artystów. A być może stworzy coś nowego, ale dopiero w 2003 r.

By week's end, a Santa Maria jury of eight women and five men will retreat behind closed doors to decide whether Michael Jackson, the world-famous entertainer, is also a child molester.
But their decision won't come before his defense attorneys and those prosecuting him get one last chance to argue their case that either Mr. Jackson is a serial pedophile who has used his fame to prey on young boys or that he is a sensitive, giving man who has been targeted by grifters after his money.
Those closing arguments are crucial, the final chance for each side to make sense for jurors of the complicated marathon 13-week trial, which has included 140 witnesses and hours of videotaped evidence.
Both sides face steep challenges. For prosecutors, they must convince jurors that the testimony of key witnesses is credible. For the defense team, it must show that although Mr. Jackson regularly slept with adolescent boys, he did not molest them.
Before the jury begins its deliberations, the prosecution and defense will confer today with Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville and decide the fine points of how the judge will instruct the jurors on the law.
This process, conducted in open court but outside of the presence of jurors, will take at least one day. Jurors will likely return to court sometime on Wednesday. Judge Melville has yet to decide whether he will deliver those instructions to jurors before closing arguments or immediately after.
District Attorney Thomas Sneddon has charged Mr. Jackson with child molestation, administering alcohol to a minor to commit a felony, and conspiracy, charges which bring up to 18 years in state prison if convicted. He has remained free on $3 million bail since his surrender on Nov. 20, 2003.
Prosecutors introduced compelling testimony about Mr. Jackson's alleged history with adolescent boys to lend weight to the current accuser's statements. Defense lawyers aggressively attacked the credibility of the prosecution's witnesses, including the accuser and his family.
The primary challenge for Senior Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen will be to persuade jurors that possible credibility problems of key witnesses don't matter -- what matters is that Mr. Jackson allegedly molested the boy and that the entertainer and his associates conspired to abduct, falsely imprison and extort the accuser and his family.
The main hurdle for lead defense lawyer Thomas Mesereau will be to convince jurors that although his client shares his bed with children, he does not molest them. The prosecution's conspiracy theory will be presented as a fabrication created by a greedy mother and blindly accepted by a vindictive district attorney.
Mr. Zonen will paint Mr. Jackson as a serial predator who built Neverland Valley Ranch to lure adolescent boys into a fantastical world where there are no inhibitions so that he can more easily seduce them.
Prosecutors allege Mr. Jackson and his associates conspired to keep a vulnerable family against their will until they agreed to participate in a video designed to defuse the public relations nightmare created by a British documentary which aired here Feb. 6, 2003. In "Living with Michael Jackson," the entertainer is seen holding hands with the boy as he states he innocently shares his bed with children.
Prosecutors insist the documentary threatened the entertainer's career and finances, motivating him to orchestrate the conspiracy. The mother testified that Jackson associates told her that her family's life was in danger if she did not cooperate. She said the family was ordered to follow a script for a rebuttal video and that when she strayed from the script, Mr. Jackson's associates planned to ship the family to Brazil.
The accuser, now 15, testified Mr. Jackson plied him with alcohol and then molested him in early March 2003. The boy's brother testified he witnessed two of four alleged incidents of molestation.
Mr. Mesereau will portray the accuser and his family as conniving grifters who have a history of targeting wealthy celebrities. They insist the mother concocted the allegations after a failed attempt to get money from Mr. Jackson and then coached her children to follow suit.
The defense lawyers paint their client as a musical genius and sensitive intellectual. They describe him as inspired by the purity of children. He revels in balloons fights and late-night sleepovers because his younger years were compromised by the rigors of his career, they maintain. The defense says Neverland remains what it was intended to be -- a magical haven for troubled, sick and underprivileged youth, a fairy-tale refuge where they can forget their woes and enjoy the innocence of childhood.
The defense lawyers point to the millions of dollars Mr. Jackson has contributed to children's charities as evidence of his good heart. They say it is his trusting and giving nature that make him an easy mark. They insist their client is the victim -- of a woman who they say has repeatedly lied to welfare authorities, law enforcement, lawyers and celebrities, all for attempted financial gain.
In the end, the case comes down to a matter of credibility. Will the jurors believe the accuser and his family? Or will they believe Mr. Jackson? The world is waiting to find out.

Zaskoczeni? Redakcja HO zanim wybierze się na szampanem płynącego Sylwestra, o wiernych użytkownikach serwisu zapomnieć nie mogła. Nie mogła i przygotowała ostatnią w tym roku aktualizację, skromną, ale jak zwykle każdy (no, prawie każdy) znajdzie w niej coś dla siebie. Recenzje filmów, książek, dvd, gry, opowiadania, zapowiedź, ciekawostki oraz najnowsze wieści ze świata grozy. A dla ciekawskich – właśnie stuknęła nam tysiąc pięćsetna filmowa recenzja!
